TORIE

Seeing Dion and Dunn and knowing they’re still alive warms my heart, but it also makes me dread staying here in Ches’s house even more. I went from being on my own to surrounded by three wonderlings and an outsider in a single day, when all I wanted to do was be alone. As long as I’m around them, I’ll spend every second of the day worrying about whether they’re all right. And if any of them fall to the darkness, I’ll have to relive the unbearable pain I’ve already had to face countless times.

I can’t lose anyone else. I won’t be able to bear it.

My only choice is to leave, which I’ve been trying to do since I saved Alice’s life. Now that Ches, Dion, and Dunn seem to be on board with sticking together for a while, I won’t have to worry about her running off and getting herself killed. They’ll keep her alive. With any luck, they’ll fight with her.

But I can’t stay.

I’m standing near the front door when Dion comes back downstairs, trying to convince myself to slip out the door and not look back. Ches has gone to forage for food, not having nearly enough in the house to feed the crowd that’s convened here, and Dunn has fallen asleep stretched out on the couch. I don’t blame him. My muscles ache, desperate for rest, but unless I want to curl up on the grassy floor, I’ll have to find somewhere else to sleep. Even more reason for me to leave.

Dion meets my eyes across the room and he must see the conflict on my face because he’s at my side in a few strides. “She’ll be fine,” he assures me, looking back over his shoulder at the stairs. “She has a fever, but is sleeping now.”

“Good. Thank you for taking care of her.” I shift my weight back and forth, my eyes darting briefly toward the front door.

“You aren’t thinking of leaving are you?” he asks with a frown.

I meet his green eyes briefly before looking away, letting my gaze fall to Dunn’s sleeping form instead. “I was just trying to make sure Alice didn’t die, but now she has you three.”

“What about fighting to save Wonderland? Is that not what the plan is?” He cocks his head to the side. “We’re going to need everyone if we’re going after them.”

I sigh heavily. “I still don’t think this is a good idea, Dion. People are going to get hurt. They’re going to die,” I say, forcing my gaze back to his.

“They’re going to die anyway, Torie. You know that, right?” He crosses his arms over his chest.

“But at least I won’t have to watch it happen,” my voice cracks and I swallow hard. “I’ve seen enough death to last the rest of my life, however long that is.”

“I understand.” He drops his voice to a gentle, tender tone. “But you aren’t the only one who’s lost friends.”

His eyes darken, and I imagine he’s running through a mental list of everyone he’s lost to the darkness.
